Do you have Big Ideas about language learning and open source data? Then sign up now to attend the Jardin Culturel’s first ever HACKATHON starting on May 23th.

We’re working hard at the Jardin to create an online community to match it’s local English, French and Spanish social clubs and workshops with lessons, daily missions, forums and practice software. We want to create a suite of tools to help language learners of all levels do the best they can. That’s where you come in.

Initially, we are looking to create a FOSS web application that can help beginners, intermediates and advanced students practice one of the hardest parts of English; Phrasal Verbs.

We’re looking for a few good hackers who can help us create:

A simple elegant interface that can work across platforms, primarily on standard browsers via WordPress

• A user login so participants can track their progress (We use BuddyPress)

• The ability for users to share their results on FB and Twitter

• A list of phrasal verbs + dictionary for search and translation

• We’d like to “set up” packs of phrasal verbs to learn for business, leisure and popular slang.

We’ve uploaded a prototype and we’ll post additional documents explaining the language we’ll use and design ideas.

If you understood any of that, sign up for our Hackathon and bring your brain, coding skills, and laptop to Jardin Culturel (16 rue saint Bernard, 31000 Toulouse) . Attendance is limited to the first 25 people who sign up.

Web development expert, Hadrien, and English expert, James Tyrrell, will be on-hand to help crowd-source a solution to our mutual Phrasal Verb problems. We’ll have WiFi available, a test server, lunch (pizza), coffee, tea, more coffee, and a free beer for each attendee will all be available courtesy of Jardin Culturel – the language centre.
